While reliefs traditionally transmitted history by depicting concrete situations, the complex colonial history of trade seems difficult to represent figuratively today. Instead, the artist relies on typologies of merchant ships of the Tanzania route, which make a historical process sensually-materially accessible.

Kapwani Kiwanga was born in 1976 in Hamilton, Canada. She currently lives and works in Paris. As a trained anthropologist and social scientist, she often takes on the role of a researcher in her installations, performances, sound and video works, consciously intertwining truth and fiction to challenge dominant historical or political narratives and suggest alternative approaches to discussion. BEDFORM  is Kiwanga's first major project in public space.

The project by Kapwani Kiwanga is part of the culture programme related to Canada’s Guest of Honour presentation at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2020/21. It is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and the Government of Canada.
