HUSH. THE REASSURER is a new production by Liz Magic Laser (New York) and Dafna Maimon (Berlin) at the interface between visual arts and performing arts. In their recent collaboration, the internationally renowned artists look at the growing demand for security in a present day increasingly perceived as ever more uncertain. Their distinctive brand of risk prevention does not insure material goods, merely our emotional balance. During the interactive performance, trained professionals will conduct diagnostic interviews with their clients, exploring the nature of their fears. What potential disasters are they particularly worried about? What strategies have they come up with in order to alleviate their concerns? What coping resources offer them comfort? These conversations provide the basis for individual insurance policies which are drawn up by the performers according to a methodology developed specially for HUSH and then handed over to each guest individually.

The analysis and compilation of a personalised reinsurance policy is free of charge for all participants; all they have to do is consent to the handover ceremony being recorded. Indeed, the artists are keen to make the video archive of all the personal insurance concepts gradually compiled on these premises accessible to anyone in need of emotional support. A public YouTube channel will serve to document the contributions.

The shop design creates an appropriate setting for the pop-up store complete with adjoining outdoor lounge. Developed by Laser and Maimon themselves, the furnishings provide a separate area for each phase of the staging. There is a lounge for visitors as they await their appointment and the drafting of their policy, with staff on hand to look after them during this time; a consultation zone is set aside for more in-depth discussions; and, finally, there is a stage for the policy handover ceremony. This is where the audience is able to follow the results of the intimate performances live.

Advice on the dramaturgy for HUSH. THE REASSURER was provided by musicologist Franziska Weigert and developed in collaboration with the performers Wissam Alkhalil, Jessica Gadani and Frieder Hepting. Produced by Lea Kissing and Till Richter for Imagine the City.

Sponsored by the Fonds Darstellende Künste with funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media as part of NEUSTART KULTUR.
